How to use the RF Power Converter

Enter an absolute RF power value and its unit to see every equivalent linear and logarithmic value.

How it works

RF power is commonly expressed as a linear value such as watts or milliwatts, or logarithmically as dBm and dBW. dBm is referenced to 1 mW and dBW is referenced to 1 W.

Example: 30 dBm equals 1 W, 0 dBm equals 1 mW, and 0 dBW also equals 1 W. An increase of 10 dB represents ten times the power.

What to keep in mind

These are absolute power conversions and do not require an impedance. Converting between RF voltage and power would additionally require the system impedance and a clear peak or RMS convention.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between dB and dBm?

dB expresses a ratio. dBm expresses an absolute power level referenced to 1 milliwatt.

Can zero watts be converted to dBm?

No finite logarithmic value represents zero watts; it approaches negative infinity.
