How to use the VSWR & Return Loss Calculator

Choose VSWR or return loss as your input and enter a valid value to calculate the equivalent RF mismatch measurements.

How it works

VSWR, return loss and reflection coefficient describe how well an RF load matches a transmission line. A perfect match has a VSWR of 1:1, a reflection coefficient of zero and theoretically infinite return loss.

Example: A VSWR of 1.5:1 corresponds to a reflection coefficient of 0.2 and return loss of approximately 13.98 dB. Only a small part of the forward power is reflected.

What to keep in mind

A low mismatch loss does not by itself prove that an antenna radiates efficiently; power can also be lost in cable, matching components and resistive elements. Treat the figures as one part of a complete RF assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Is a higher return loss better?

Yes. A higher positive return-loss value indicates less reflected power and a better impedance match.

Can VSWR be below 1:1?

No. A passive measurement below 1:1 is not physically valid and usually indicates a convention or measurement problem.
