How it works

The word counter measures words, characters, sentences and estimated reading time while you type. Words are separated using whitespace, character count includes spaces and punctuation, and sentence count uses common sentence-ending punctuation as a practical approximation.

Example: A 900-word article is estimated at roughly four minutes when using an average reading speed of about 225 words per minute. Real reading time varies with subject matter, formatting and the reader.

What to keep in mind

Automated counts can differ from a word processor when text contains hyphens, abbreviations, unusual punctuation or languages that do not normally separate words with spaces. Use the same counting method throughout a project when a strict limit matters.
